Our History

Introduction

We have been in existance since 1967

St. Charles Lwanga Girls’ Training Centre Kalungu is a boarding school for ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels, founded in 1967 by the Missionaries of Africa Fathers, known as the “White Fathers.” Situated in Kalungu District, the school is a Catholic institution under Masaka Diocese, dedicated to empowering young women through quality education.

Founding Vision

Inspired by the late Rev. Fr. Emilien La Criox, the school's founding vision was to uplift the Girl Child, providing her with practical skills that were denied by societal norms.

Fr. La Criox believed that "Educating a woman is educating a nation," and sought to empower young women through skills like sewing, cookery, music, agriculture, and personal management.

Early Development

  • 1958 - Beginnings: The school initially operated from an old church in Kalungu sub-parish under Villa-Maria Parish, offering skills training in sewing, typing, cookery, and carpentry.
  • 1960s - Relocation: As enrollment grew, the school relocated to its current site. The construction of a dining hall, dormitories, and classrooms paved the way for the full relocation in 1967, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the school's history.

Evolution of Curriculum

St. Charles Lwanga’s curriculum evolved over time, maintaining a focus on holistic and practical education. Core subjects such as computer studies (replacing typing), agriculture, sewing, music, and personal management are integral to the curriculum, reflecting the founder’s vision of nurturing well-rounded individuals.
